Students! The first two lists on this page provide you with readings in English by those authors whose work appears in the textbook, and about topics raised in Lessons 16-18. These are followed by several brief bibliographies covering a range of topics in history, politics and culture, and a selection of English translations (novels, short stories, poetry) from Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian, a list of useful literary periodicals and reference works on culture. If you have read a book you would like to recommend to other students which is not on the list, send us the reference and your comment and we'll include both. We are also interested your comments on the books listed below.

After some of the entries you will find bracketed references to the national membership of the author [B - Bosnian, C - Croatian, J - Jewish, M - Montenegrin, S - Serbian, Y - Yugoslav]. These designations must be taken with a grain of salt. Some writers declare their membership unambiguously in one of the national literary traditions, while others make it clear that they do not place much, or, indeed, any stock in national membership. And there are yet others whose feelings about this change over time. For the purposes of this website, the designations are meant to serve as a rudimentary form of guidance for students wanting to read further in the cultures related to the language or languages they have chosen for study among Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian.
